Where are you going from here?

Career Talk March 2 2017, MSU-IIT ECE Week (March 2-5)

My good advice to students who wants to go somewhere else, other than the Philippines.

Which direction are you going to take after college, or after you become an engineer or a technician? Most people will tell you to go overseas because the truth is there is no opportunity here. But what about your own family, friends that you care, favourite pets and the many places you enjoyed having fun for so many years. Are you just going to leave the place, for what – the money? Of course that is what most of us is up to and that is what we keep on focusing on – money.

When we graduate, we accomplish one important goal that is to finish a degree on electronics engineering. There are lots of your seniors who took two licensure exam, one for electronics technician (ECT) and the other for electronics engineer (ECE). Well that’s fine and another good achievement of you if you make it. I urge everyone of you to keep on learning and sharing, enjoy life while you can.

Let me ask you a question, why do we need to go to school if after all we don’t have the opportunity to use it? I am giving you a glimpse of reality here so you will be prepared in facing your own future – but really I want you think it over in spite of majority are still deciding to go somewhere else.

Most people are taught so they could better interact with others. Our parents send us in school so we could become much competitive than the other. So are we still going to school to work on foreign lands? (the audience didn’t have a clue, why?)

Let me tell you something. Only a few of you remember the names of previous companies here in Iligan City (National Steel Corporation, Mindanao Portland Cement, etc.). Companies, like us, grow old. When we are young just like most of you here, full of energy and lots of fresh ideas. We compete, expand, and mature through time, then fade away and somehow become legends. And like companies, our government too will lose the desire to serve us better.

Electronics is so dynamic that in order to keep pace, you have to be smarter than anyone else, in a blink of an eye those who lag behind become irrelevant. Any government or company who don’t innovate become irrelevant.

Competitiveness is an enduring challenge on every country in the marketplace. We compete on opportunities, investments, skills, etc. and if we don’t, there is not much for shopping malls to be built in our city. If we can’t satisfy our people we expect less smiling faces.

To innovate means government must focus on what is important, what really matters – solutions and not the problem. Our local government should seize the opportunity of having you, the future engineers and technicians, as a team in shaping our future.

There is no exception, the government is assured that you are the formula for growth. Further development and upgrading the right skills for the marketplace.

I remember the time I taught programming language that after several years it become useless – that’s one of the reason why we need to innovate. Some of the knowledge we impart to our students would sooner be of no value. So how do we prepare our children for their future? By developing their creativity with communication and analytical tools needed to make them even better. I have seen many schools are doing better on these.

With the government, they should also think strategically not putting all its efforts on usual transaction but rather toward improving education, research and development. If the government set an example for innovation, people will feel inspired working with their own ideas, they aim higher and would create more business opportunities.

Innovative government put people first, attract talent, work and serve efficiently, and continually upgrade their own systems and services for the people. The government that empower their own citizens to cultivate their energy, develop their potential- they become builders of their society.

So now you know overseas is not an opportunity to be taken, it can be a trap and a real disadvantage to our country.
