Where are you going from here?

Image
Career Talk March 2 2017, MSU-IIT ECE Week (March 2-5) My good advice to students who wants to go somewhere else, other than the Philippines. Which direction are you going to take after college, or after you become an engineer or a technician? Most people will tell you to go overseas because the truth is there is no opportunity here. But what about your own family, friends that you care, favourite pets and the many places you enjoyed having fun for so many years. Are you just going to leave the place, for what – the money? Of course that is what most of us is up to and that is what we keep on focusing on – money. When we graduate, we accomplish one important goal that is to finish a degree on electronics engineering. There are lots of your seniors who took two licensure exam, one for electronics technician (ECT) and the other for electronics engineer (ECE). Well that’s fine and another good achievement of you if you make it. I urge everyone of you to keep on learning and shari...

Technnovation 2016

Image
I was invited to be a judge for three students projects namely; a Solar-powered Hybrid Vending Machine, Smart Switch, and an Improved Mechanized Ice Cream mixer done by graduating electrical engineering students who participate on Iligan Institute of Technology, Mindanao State University – Innovation Convergence last August 30-31, 2016. The title of the event was 2016 Technnovation with the theme, “Advancing Technopreneurship and Innovation in Mindanao”. In parallel with other session they have these: Cluster 1 Resilient Structures, Disaster Risk Reduction and Management and Environment Cluster 2 Energy and Power Cluster 3 Health, and Pharmaceuticals Cluster 4 Food and Nutrition Cluster 5 Instrumentation and Control I am at Cluster 5 to judge the three projects, this is last August 31, 2016. The first one the Solar-powered Hybrid Vending Machine was very crude but I could understand that the students has to balance their budget with the idea of having an economically and portable v...

Breaking the Bad Structured Cabling Habit

Image
I had a technical talk in Iligan Institute of Technology, Mindanao State University last September 22 2016. This was in a gymnasium, the organiser choose that place to accommodate both the professionals, visitors and the students on its 1st JIECEP-IBC Summit 2016. The seminar, “ Implementing a Structured Cabling System ”, is based on ISO/IEC 11801. My plan was to discuss the important issues ignored during the implementation. I have intentionally selected few sections to fit the allotted time.  A Structured Cabling System (SCS) is a method for creating an organized cabling system that can be easily understood by installers, network administrators, and any other technicians that deal with cables. This method works best when you follow the standards. Industralized nations have the standards. Specialist / Engineers who made these standards have extensive experience over this technology. Every 5 to 10 years these standards are reviewed and change when necessary to fit in...

The Endless Gift of Sharing

Image
Computer Hardware Module I still remember the time when I was a kid, I would receive frequent scolding from my mom for not studying good to earn good grades. It took me a very long time to realize how important education towards meeting challenges in life is. As part of our childhood, I think most of us do not remember the complexities involved with learning something in school. Many children are struggling on how to read, and they prefer to play instead. This is what makes the equation more interesting to me, allow them to play around and subconsciously they will learn something. I never thought that if I share my skills, I will be losing money or I will get broke but it didn’t. My experience in giving my time, energy, resources, and leadership to create a positive impact in my community is awesome. I could not explain the feeling having to train people to learn electronics, computers, or self-development and hearing their own stories how they used that skills into their own live...

The Electronics Engineering Law of 2004, RA9292

Image
The Republic Act 9292, known as the “Electronics Engineering Law of 2004” recognizes the importance of electronics engineering profession in nation-building and development. Its goal is to develop and nurture outstanding, high-caliber, and internationally competitive electronics engineering professionals that meet the global standards of practice and service. As stated in the Section 34, Article V of this act, electronics engineering professionals shall hold government positions that require the services of Professional Electronics Engineers, Electronics Engineers, and Electronics Technicians with scope of practice as specified in Section 5, Article I. Official Gazette of the Philippines, 2004 This provision is further reinforced by DILG Memorandum Circular 2013-01 which prompts Local Government Units to ensure that electronics engineering professionals hold positions or assignments that supervise, manage, and administer electronics services and regulate electronics ...

Is it legal to install CCTV on a do it yourself setting in the Philippines? PD 1096, the National Building Code of the Philippines (NBCP) 3. LEGAL COMPLIANCE 3.1 Section 301 of the NBCP provides that “NO PERSON, FIRM OR CORPORATION, INCLUDING ANY AGENCY, OR INSTRUMENTALITY, OF THE GOVERNMENT SHALL ERECT, CONSTRUCT, ALTER, REPAIR, MOVE, CONVERT OR DEMOLISH ANY BUILDING OR STRUCTURE OR CAUSE THE SAME TO BE DONE WITHOUT FIRST OBTAINING A BUILDING PERMIT THEREFORE FROM THE BUILDING OFFICIAL ASSIGNED IN THE PLACE WHERE THE SUBJECT BUILDING IS LOCATED OR THE BUILDING WORK IS TO BE DONE.”  The NBCP also specifies the documentary requirements to be submitted as well as the general processes that local governments have to follow in approving the building permit application.  3.2 Section 309 of the NBCP provides that “NO BUILDING OR STRUCTURE SHALL BE USED OR OCCUPIED AND NO CHANGE IN THE EXISTING USE OR OCCUPANCY CLASSIFICATION OF A BUILDING OR STRUCTURE OR PORTION THEREOF SHALL...

How does Artificial Intelligence Affects Surveillance?

Image
The good part of AI is that it can be trained to identify and learn patterns and parameters, similar to the human brain. Machine learning and deep learning are both types of AI. With machine learning, systems embedded with AI can automatically adapt and learn from events without being explicitly programmed. However, a machine can also be trained through program settings to follow a set of rules, i.e. algorithms, to give  advanced features when it comes to security. Using behavioral analytics, a self-learning, A.I. takes the data from video cameras and continuously classifies objects and events that it sees. Take for example, a person crossing a street is one classification. A group of people is another classification. AI algorithms can effectively detect anomalies, such as unattended bags or suspicious activities, and raise alerts in real-time, significantly reducing response times. Using rule-based intelligence, AI and video analysis tools enable security teams to detect po...
